We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shoshana Hallowell.
Shoshana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
Operation Breast Density is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving breast cancer detection and survival through education, advocacy, and access to care. The organization raises awareness about the critical impact of breast density—a factor that not only increases a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer but also makes it more difficult to detect cancer on mammograms.

Roughly half of all women may need extra screening for this cancer. Some struggle to access it
April 28, 2025
When Dr. Shoshana Hallowell, a breast surgeon with McLaren Health System in Lapeer, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, she knew it put all of her first-degree relatives at higher risk for developing the same condition.
Having a parent, sibling or child with breast cancer almost doubles one's risk for the cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, so Hallowell had her sister, Janet Greaves, get an MRI for her breasts.
Greaves had already had a mammogram six months earlier, which came back normal, but the MRI revealed something her mammogram didn't: a 3 cm tumor. The mass was likely hidden among dense breast tissue, since both appear white on the scans.

Operation Breast Density launches funding campaign to cover cost of life-saving cancer screenings
April 25, 2024
“Operation Breast Density — which helps educate and raise awareness related to a particular problem in mammogram reporting — seeks to provide 100 women at high risk for breast cancer with free Whole Breast Ultrasounds and/or Rapid/Fast MRI screenings. The goal is raising $50,000 by June 30 to start the screenings.
The standard cost for a Whole Breast Ultrasound averages around $300 and a Rapid Breast MRI is approximately $500. Insurance often doesn’t cover this additional level of breast cancer screening.”
